A simple staircase system consists of three main components.
- Treads: The portion on which we step.
- Risers: The portion that allows elevation.
- Nosing: The profiled portion that is usually rounded and overshooting the treads. The nosing may be combined with the tread as a wider slab.

Natural stones are in use for centuries for stairways to facilitate moving from a lower level to a higher level. In earlier architectural eras entire blocks for the staircase system were carved out of natural stones. In the modern or contemporary architectural era, the stairways are constructed in the above three components. There may be more components depending on the type of stairways. In multi-storied elevations, spiraled stairways are used.
